A superb pair of men’s ceremonial clogs - Lot 46
A superb pair of men’s ceremonial clogs Made of carved, engraved, stained, and varnished wood, with black glass half-spheres for the eyes. The toes of each clog are carved with a hen’s head and her twelve chicks, arranged facing each other. The opening of each shoe can be concealed by a custom-fit lid, adorned with a fox lying in wait. The bodies of the shoes are decorated with zigzag lines and striations on the hens’ heads to imitate plumage, along with a pattern of superimposed lines at the level of the chicks. The eyes are represented by black glass hemispheres. Ain, late 19th century L. 37.5 cm Damage and restorations
