Sisowath Monivong was the fourteenth son of King Sisowath I. He was born in Phnom Penh. In 1904, his father Prince Sisowath acceded to the throne. In 1906, Monivong accompanied his father to France, where he underwent military training at Saint-Maixent. He then embarked on a military career, notably with the 2nd Foreign Legion Regiment in Saïda, Algeria, where he was promoted to captain. When his father died, Monivong, the eldest surviving son of the late King, gave up his ambition to become the first Asian general in the French army and acceded to the throne on August 9, 1927. French Indochina is a territory of the former French Colonial Empire, the most populous and wealthiest within the Empire. Officially known as the Indochinese Union, then the Indochinese Federation, it was given a common status in 1887 by the amalgamation, until its disappearance in 1954, of various French-dominated entities in the Far East: three now-independent Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, plus a small portion of Chinese territory in present-day Guangdong province. It encompassed several territories conquered between 1858 and 1907 by France as part of its expansion in East Asia. CV
