China, Qing dynasty, 19th century - Lot 10
China, Qing dynasty, 19th century Court dress in blue silk embroidered with multicolored silk and metallic threads, decorated with eight five-clawed dragons chasing pearls among clouds, bats and eight Buddhist symbols (bajixiang), above lishui waves containing Taoist symbols, the collar and chest border in blue and gold woven silk, metal buttons, all lined in light blue. H. 111.5 cm; L. 145 cm Moisture stain on lining. This informal, short dress has wide Chinese-style sleeves, unlike the typical Manchu "clog" sleeves. It probably belonged to a dignitary. Provenance: Despite the absence of documents illustrating the provenance of this set, we know that the sellers' paternal great-aunt was a music teacher in Hanoi. Their maternal grandmother worked at the Hanoi Museum after the death of her husband. The works presented today are probably souvenirs brought back to France by one or other of them.
