Chamba statuette, Nigeria - Lot 269
Chamba statuette, Nigeria Carved by Soompa H. 60 cm Old patina. Damage, missing parts. Provenance : Former Michel Andrault collection Richard Fardon and Christine Stelzig have identified some fifteen statuettes sculpted by Soompa, a Chamba artist. One of the distinctive features of his work is that the arms of these statuettes are projected forward, forming a diamond shape. The palette fingers are clearly represented, and the legs are short and particularly wide apart. While the facial features are barely sketched, the square mouth is deeply hollowed out. The ears form the letter C, and an imposing summit crest follows the shape of the skull. Most of Soompa's sculptures depict a male-female couple sharing the same pair of legs. The statuette in the Andrault collection is distinguished from this corpus by the presence of facial scarification. Bibliography: See Hellmich and Jordan (Embodiements, Masterworks of African Figurative Sculpture, 2015, pl.41) for a comparable work. Expert : Aurore KRIER-MARIANI - +33 (0)6 17 18 11 36
