Senoufo pendant, Korhogo, Ivory Coast - Lot 134
Senoufo pendant, Korhogo, Ivory Coast Late 19th - early 20th century Bronze H. 4.5 cm Bibliography : Blandin André, Bronzes et autres alliages, Afrique de l'Ouest, André Blandin, Marignane, 1988, 288 pages. Surmounting a narrow frieze, two figures are shown standing side by side in a similar posture, characteristic of the corpus - arms free from the body, hands brought to the hips, legs spread. Identified as a pair of twins, or a couple, the female-male attributes are clearly represented. The spirit of the bush contained in the effigy shines through in the anthropozoomorphic character of the figurine, with feet and mouths evoking the legs and beaks of birds, and outstretched arms suggesting outstretched wings.
