Marotte kebe kebe Kuyu, Republic of Congo - Lot 86
Marotte kebe kebe Kuyu, Republic of Congo Wood, pigments H. 70 cm Missing Bibliography : Bénézech Anne- Marie, "So-Called Kuyu Carvings", African Arts, 1988 Nov 01. 22(1), p. 52-99. Headdresses topped with a fragmentary animal - as here, a bird - constitute the fourth sub-group identified by Anne-Marie Bénézech within the larger corpus of kebe kebe heads mounted on a monoxyl cylindrical handle, taking part in Djo ceremonies traditionally retelling Kuyu cosmogonic narratives using a large pantheon of mythical entities. Among the animals venerated by this people living in the northern part of the Republic of Congo, the bird perched atop the sculpted heads evokes the celestial world. Much more than simple zoomorphic representations, these totemic animals bear witness to a profound spirituality and guide the Kuyu in their quest for understanding and harmony. Their expressive power is accentuated by the special treatment of the mouth, with its visible filed teeth. Beautifully preserved polychromy.
