EXCEPTIONAL COMMODE "À LA REGENCE" BY PIERRE... - Lot 62 - De Baecque et Associés
EXCEPTIONAL COMMODE "À LA REGENCE" BY PIERRE HACHE H. 82,5 ; W. 130 (with marble) ; D. 65,5 cm Private collection Bibliography : Le génie des Hache, P. et F. Rouge, Faton 2005, described p. 266 ; and two other models of similar shape similar shape pp. 263-264 and 265, as well as the chest of drawers known as "aux Armoiries" from the Fondation Glénat (in Le couvent Sainte Cécile, Editions Glénat 2013, pp. 112-115, notice by Françoise Rouge) Opening with two rows of drawers - including two drawers in the upper row - curved in a crossbow around a flat central part. Curved sides with a projection at the back. Projecting front legs ending in arched feet, connected to the lower crosspiece by a powerful "vaulted" line around the apron, as well as on the sides. Rich decoration of marquetry "à l'italienne" of foliage scrolls, acanthus and flowers on a burned wood background, on a background of sycamore burr on the drawers, sycamore root on the sides, and ash burr on the protrusions and the back legs. Fine walnut and boxwood fillets around the fillets decorated with "small hands" drawing arabesques and double friezes on the front, cartouches on the projection of the back legs and geometric reserves on the sides. Olivier on the edges of the drawers. Stamped on the edge of the three drawers HACHE IN GRENOBLE Pierre HACHE (1705-1776), cabinetmaker of the Duke of Orleans, Grenoble around 1735-1745 Antique marble and floor, cracks on the sides, small lacks, fillets with "small hands" redone at the end of the springs. Ornamented with Louis XV foliated bronzes, replacing - probably at the time for more modernity - the Louis XIV drop handles originally planned, as evidenced by the presence of square holes on the reverse of the drawers. Key missing. PIERRE HACHE AND CHARLES CRESSENT This very high quality model is part of a particularly small group of three chests of drawers, similar in form and decoration, made by Pierre Hache between 1730 and 1740 (in Le génie des Hache, Pierre et Françoise Rouge, Faton 2005, pp. 263-264 and 265, 266). Charles Cressent (1685-1768), the Regent's cabinetmaker, designed at the same time models similar to the Hache's in their shape with protruding uprights and with a "vaulted" design of the lower crosspieces. But unlike the Parisian commodes, which have the same width of chamfers throughout their height, those of Pierre Hache are wider in the concave parts of the chamfers than in their protruding part, because the fronts and sides are curved in plan only, while the protruding uprights are curved in elevation (ibidem, p. 184). The decoration obviously remains faithful to the fundamental principles of the workshop founded by Thomas Hache at the dawn of the XVIIIth century, with the use of beautiful stained native wood burls and marquetries known as "à l'italienne", prepared in advance according to the economy of a well organized workshop. Once revived, the colors of the sycamore burls of the drawer reserves and of the lock entrances should find their initial red, on a blond burl background, while the ash burls of the back jambs will display their usual green color (ibidem, p. 265).
