19TH-CENTURY ROMANTIC HARDCOVER CHILDREN’S BOOKS - Lot 17
19TH-CENTURY ROMANTIC HARDCOVER CHILDREN’S BOOKS 155 volumes in 12mo and 8vo formats, with publisher’s decorated hardcovers, including 130 with color lithographs on the front cover. A REMARKABLE COLLECTION, especially in such fine condition as here, assembled by a discerning collector over several decades. The production of these premium-quality books from 1850 to 1890, closely linked to that of devotional books, was a sort of provincial specialty. They were all published by the publishing houses Mégard in Rouen, Mame in Tours, Ardant or Barbou in Limoges, Lefort in Lille, and Guyot in Lyon. They feature texts by the most prolific authors of the era and, in almost every case, beautiful engravings to illustrate them. These publisher’s bindings, modeled after the exquisite bindings of pre-Revolutionary almanacs and poetry volumes, are richly decorated. Shades of gold, green, white, blue, and red blend beautifully on the covers, which are often adorned with delicate chromolithographic medallions.
