China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century - Lot 227
China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century Accordion-fold “Miao” album containing 72 ink-and-color paintings on paper depicting Miao men and women engaged in various activities in landscapes, with a paragraph of calligraphic text on each, bound in wooden covers, the title in black ink almost completely faded, probably “Miao man tu 苗蠻圖,” and a more recent inscription consisting of four characters. L. 29.2 cm - H. 26.3 cm (LDM) Water stains, pinholes. The set is separated. The “Miao man tu” or “Bai miao tu” are a genre of illustrated Chinese ethnographic albums, produced primarily during the Qing Dynasty, which combined paintings and descriptive texts to depict the life, customs, and traditional dress of the ethnic minorities of southwestern China, particularly the Miao people (whose name is sometimes used to refer to these ethnic groups as a whole). Often commissioned by Han or Manchu nobles, these albums reflect the contemporary view of these peoples living on the “frontiers” of the empire.
