Elizabeth I was born on September 7, 1533 at Placentia Palace in London and died on March 24, 1603 at Richmond Palace in the same city. She was Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII, and the fifth and last member of the Tudor dynasty on the English throne. The execution of her mother Anne Boleyn, three years after her birth, meant she lost her title of princess, received at birth and enshrined in the Second Act of Succession. His half-brother Edward VI appointed his cousin Jeanne Grey as his successor, by means of a letter patent, thus excluding his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth from succession to the throne. However, Edward VI's letter patent is interpreted as an act of treason, and Jeanne Grey is executed. Mary - daughter of Henry VIII and the Catholic Catherine of Aragon - became Queen in July 1553. Elizabeth succeeded her five years later, after spending almost two months in prison for her alleged support of Protestant rebels and more than four years under house arrest, between Woodstock Palace and Hatfield Palace.
