¤ LUBA, HEMBA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO - Lot 248
¤ LUBA, HEMBA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO Monoxyle hardwood caryatid stool with a beautiful shiny black patina due to handling of the seat and long ritual use. The circular seat is supported on the head of a standing female figure with raised arms and wide-open hands, three fingers from each giving the illusion of maintaining the seat's balance and giving it great lightness. The legs are bent and the wide feet rest on a circular, stepped base, like the underside of the seat. This caryatid bears all the classic attributes (keloids, scarification marks, long headdress, elaborate bun) as found on pieces from workshops in the south-eastern Congo region, between the banks of the Lomani and Lwika rivers. Late 19th - early 20th century H. 38 cm The underside of the base is slightly eroded, probably due in large part to xylophagous attack during storage between ceremonies. Provenance: Private collection
