¤ MUMUYÉ, BENOUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA - Lot 208
¤ MUMUYÉ, BENOUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA Male Lagalagana statue in wood with remnants of natural pigments and brown patina of long ritual use. Its function is that of guardian and protector of the family clan. An imposing head is supported by a powerful neck on the upper third of the sculpture. The bust, armed with prominent pectorals, is slightly rotated, and the two arms, lifted from the body, stop just above the hips. The sculpture ends with two short legs showing signs of erosion. The position of the legs is off-axis, making this one of the "dancing" models. Soclée Late 19th -early 20th century H. 33cm Provenance: Galerie Carrefour (Pierre et Claude Vérité, Boulevard Raspail, Paris). Galerie Dereck Graine
