¤ MUMUYÉ, BENOUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA. - Lot 203
¤ MUMUYÉ, BENOUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA. Large male Lagalagana wooden statue, beautiful dark patina, for long ritual use. Its function is that of guardian and protector of the family clan. His head features a summit crest and large ears. The face, with its two large round eyes, is entirely scarified, as is the abdomen above the protruding navel. The two arms, raised slightly forward from the torso, give a sort of movement, as do the undulating legs. It is typically in the style of the famous master sculpture Nyavo-Père de Pantisawa and is very close to models in major collections (Duperrier/Goldet, Berna). Soclée First half of the 20th century H. 73 cm Provenance: Collection of a Swiss architect, brought back before 1920
