¤ DOGON, MALI - Lot 100
¤ DOGON, MALI Statue of a female ancestor in the Bombou Toro style, a village located in the heart of the Bandiagara cliffs. She is seated, but without a seat. Hardwood (acacia) with a dark, heavily oozing patina, the result of numerous ritual offerings. The head is adorned with a long crest that runs down the back of the head and extends to the front of the nose, a classic treatment often found on statuary from this ethnic group. The eyes are very wide-set, almost half-closed as a sign of contemplation and wisdom. The lippered lips are adorned with a labret, which is slightly missing due to a chip. A long neck links the head to the beautiful, energetic chest, below which descend the two arms, well detached from the bust with its prominent navel. The hands rest on the front of the knees. This sculpture has all the qualities of an ancient cult piece. An old collector's label still visible under the base indicates the town of Délémont (Swiss Jura). 19th century H. 43 cm Provenance: Collection of a Swiss architect, brought back before 1920
