* MENDI, SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, - Lot 15
* MENDI, SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, War shield in carved wood and polychrome pigments with a beautiful patina of age and long warlike use. It is carved with a stone tool, indicating pre-contact manufacture. The decoration is an abstract figure evoking the face of a protective ancestor. The handle is made of plant fibers and forms the two pupils of the "eyes" as they emerge through the holes in the center. H. 112cm - L. 38cm Provenance: Collections of Rudy Komon (1908-1982), Ray Hughes (1946-2017) and Chris Boylan (Australia)
