Gyula Kosztolányi Kann (Budapest 1868 - Budapest 1946)
Gyula Kosztolányi Kann was a Hungarian painter and architect born in 1868 into a family of merchants. Initially trained as an architect in Budapest, he soon developed a passion for painting, studying in particular with the famous Hungarian portrait painter Bertalan Karlovszky (1858-1938). In the 1890s, he travelled to Munich to train with Simon Hollósy (1857-1918), a Hungarian naturalist painter who was one of the founders of the famous Nagybánya Artists' Colony. Gyula Kosztolányi Kann's style evolved throughout his life. His early works are characterized by a naturalistic vision of nature. He then moved towards a new artistic language, with a focus on light, simplified forms and a vivid palette. Like the Hungarian painters of his generation, Gyula Kosztolányi Kann trained himself by looking at the art of Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne. In the course of his artistic career, he became a founding member of the Hungarian Impressionist and Naturalist Circle (Magyar Impresszionisták és Naturalisták Köre (MIÉNK)). This Hungarian group contributed to the modernization of Hungarian art history in the early 20th century. He took an active part in the exhibitions of his time, and received awards, notably in 1911 in Budapest, where he was awarded the György Ráth prize for one of his landscapes, which is now a museum in Hungary. Gyula Kosztolányi Kann's works can be found in museums such as the Hungarian National Gallery and Buda Castle in Budapest. Gyula Kosztolányi Kann died in 1946, aged 78, in his native Budapest, Hungary.
