Mikola ANDRAS (Nagypeleske 1884- Nagybánya 1970) - Lot 215
Mikola ANDRAS (Nagypeleske 1884- Nagybánya 1970) Small market in Nagybánya Oil on canvas, signed lower right "Mikola". H. 70 cm - L. 83.5 cm Tear top right, restorations, craquelure The artist here depicts a view of the Turnul Ștefan (Saint Stephen's Tower) in Nagybánya. This Transylvanian town, formerly in Hungary and since the 1919 Treaty of Versailles in Romania under the name of Baia Mare, was the center of the so-called Nagybánya Artists' Colony. Initiated in 1896, this movement exerted a major influence on modern Hungarian painting at the dawn of the 20th century. The particularity of this school is to have introduced the contributions of naturalism and the plein-air painting movement. André Kostolany's collection includes two works by one of the founders of this colony of painters: Károly Ferenczy (see nos. 208 and 209 above). Other notable members of this movement include Béla Iványi Grünwald (cf., no. 210), Janos Thorma and Mikola Andras.
