We can relate this work to the famous painting "Flox and Filox", depicting the artist's mother, produced during the same period and kept at the Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria), under inventory number FK3759. Here, the painter depicts his father in the same armchair he used to paint his mother, in the same room near the window. The chromatic range used hints at green tones similar to those used in the painting "Flox and Filox".
The interior scenes Rippl-Rónai created after his return to Hungary in 1900 were a great success, particularly those painted in the Kaposvár house he acquired in 1902. Here, Rippl-Rónai captures an intimate scene of his father asleep in an armchair, using the commonly-used door ajar to reveal the action beyond.
