CEYLAN Princely state of India - Lot 160
CEYLAN Princely state of India RAMA VARMA V May 19, 1837 - August 4, 1885 Stylized animal on obverse and reverse. Lot of 9 gold Viraraya Fanams minted in 1881 (2.20 g) Very beautiful. [9] Rama Varma V, also known as Rama Varma the Scholar, was Maharadja of Travancore from 1880 à 1885. He succeeded his elder brother AyilyThirunal. Although the Viraraya Fanams are listed under Travancore, they were issued by rulers in Ceylon. They were probably found in Travancore because they are geographically close to each other and this coinage was used in trade. These small coins reveal important economic and cultural aspects of the region at the end of the 19th century. Expert : Cabinet Jean VICHON
