BEROALDE DE VERVILLE. L'IDEE DE LA REPUBLIQUE - DIALOGUE DE - Lot 9
BEROALDE DE VERVILLE. L'IDEE DE LA REPUBLIQUE - DIALOGUE DE LA VERTU. Paris, Thimothée Jouan, 1584. 2 works of [10]-101 (of 103)-[1] and 24 leaves in 1 volume in-16, marbled calf, gilt lace on covers, ornate smooth spine (binding, late 18th century).
VERY RARE ORIGINAL EDITION of this long poem, divided into 7 books, inspired by Thomas More's Utopia, in which he discusses "the Duty of each one, that which concerns the police in its entirety, perfects the state, & shows to all according to their quality & condition the means of living well & happily in human society, & shaping themselves to good morals". Printed in small italics, this is one of the rarest editions of the author's work. Leaves 16 and 17 of the Idée de la République are missing, small lateral stain on the first 2 leaves, otherwise a very good copy. (Tchemerzine I, 654-654a) (Diane Barbier-Muller, Inventaire. n°57) (USTC n° 14652).
