AGRICOLA (G). DE MENSURIS & PONDERIBUS ROMANORUM ATQUE G - Lot 2
AGRICOLA (G). Basel, Froben, 1550. In folio of [8] - 344 (chiffr. 340) - [16] pages, brown calf, spine with ornate nerves (early binding). First collective edition of the six treatises on weights and measures in antiquity, procured by the German humanist G. Agricola (1494-1555), of which the last three texts are published for the first time. This work is also invaluable for the study of Roman and Greek numerals, as well as measurement symbols. It explains the origins of certain measurement systems that predate the metric system, and of symbols still used by apothecaries. The last treatise, devoted to the price of gold and silver coins, is fundamental to European monetary history. Restoration, original spine preserved. A good copy. (USTC no. 600319).
