TUNISIA, Tunis, late 19th-early 20th century Exceptional ceremonial costume including "sarouel" or "seroual" pants and bodice. Pink silk with metallic threads and silver sequins. Pants adorned with swirling scrolls around a spiral from which flowers and foliage radiate. Ivory cotton lining protrudes from the bottom of the legs to make it puffy. Pink silk bodice with silver metallic embroidery. No back opening. Beige cotton lining (Condition: stains, wear). Height (without extension): 102 cm; Total length: 135 cm. Bodice: Height 30 cm; Length 54 cm LS Very heavy women's ceremonial costume, most probably a wedding outfit, with pants gathered at the waist by a belt; the swollen legs fall in large folds over the ankle with the help of an invisible drawstring that distributes the gathers. Several similar "sarouel" pants are preserved at the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac (inv. 71.1989.25.201.1 and 2, and inv. 71.1969.33.29 for example).
