Icon of the Mother of God "Khlebenaya", protector of harvest - Lot 97
Icon of the Mother of God "Khlebenaya", protector of harvests and against famine. Tempera and gold on wood. Russia, circa 1900. H. 21.5 cm - L. 17 cm Gaps in material Expert : Maxime CHARRON History The name "Khlebnaya" literally means "she of bread" or "related to bread". This icon is therefore symbolically associated with essential food, the blessing of harvests and protection against famine. In Orthodox spirituality, bread is not just food: it also evokes Christ as the "bread of life", giving this icon a dimension that is both material and profoundly Eucharistic. The first mentions of this icon appear in rural areas of imperial Russia, probably between the 17th and 19th centuries. It was particularly venerated in farming villages, where it was prayed to for good harvests or protection from famine.
