POPULAR IMAGERY (18th century) - Lot 164
POPULAR IMAGERY (18th century) Tableau des massacres commis dans le palais d'Avignon sous les ordres des principaux chefs de l'armée de Monteux. Wood engraving. Rare proof on laid paper with the names of the victims and the assassins. H. 48.4 cm - L. 41 cm Heavily yellowed proof, with some missing title, heavy foxing and folds. In autumn 1791, Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin were torn between patriots in favor of joining France and counter-revolutionaries attached to pontifical authority. These massacres fueled an abundance of popular imagery, with engravings denouncing the "Avignon palace massacres" and listing the victims and executioners.
