China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) - Lot 18
China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) Set of seven rank badges for civil officials, buzi, known as mandarin squares, embroidered with metallic threads (and glass beads), on a black silk ground, each decorated with a bird (crane, egret, two pheasants, etc.) surrounded by clouds and auspicious symbols above waves and rocks, various borders, lined. 27 x 28; 26.5 x 29.5; and others 29.5 to 30 x 30 to 31 cm. Disconnected threads, three originally in two parts, here sewn back together. Provenance: Despite the absence of documents illustrating the provenance of this set, we know that the sellers' paternal great-aunt was a music teacher in Hanoi. Their maternal grandmother worked at the Hanoi Museum after the death of her husband. The works presented today are probably souvenirs brought back to France by one or other of them.
