Louis-Robert CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1848-1913) - Lot 163
Louis-Robert CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1848-1913) Large baluster amphora vase on pedestal, flared neck in earthenware with wine-red ground, decorated in high relief with a nude young woman between two putti, the side handle evoking a gnarled branch from which stems of flowers emerge in relief. Signed "Louis Carrier-Belleuse" on the bottom of the vase. H. 54 cm AJ A chip on the foot. This work was most probably made at the Choisy-le-Roi factory. Louis-Robert Carrier-Belleuse was the son of sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), whose pupil he was. At the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he studied with Gustave Boulanger and Alexandre Cabanel. In 1877, he gained his first experience of ceramics with Théodore Deck. At the 1881 Salon, he won the prize for best painter, followed by the prize for best sculptor at the 1889 Salon. He designed models for the Choisy-le-Roi earthenware factory, of which he was artistic director.
