Paul GAYRARD (1807 - 1855) - Lot 145
Paul GAYRARD (1807 - 1855) Portrait of Louise d'Orléans, known as La reine bien-aimée, first Queen of the Belgians. Bronze with brown and bronze patina, sand cast. Signed and dated "P. Gayrard. 1839" on the edge of the terrace. H. 32 cm - W. 28 cm - D. 23 cm AL-EJ Related literature Stanislas Lami, Dictionnaire des sculpteurs de l'école française au XIXe siècle, 1919, pp. 39-42. Paul Gayrard trained with François Rude and David d'Angers. Specializing in sculpted portraits and animal subjects, he exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1827 to 1855. He was the sculptor of the d'Orléans family, and his portraits of Louis Philippe I (1831), the Comte d'Orsay and the Prince de Joinville are well known. The portrait of Louise d'Orléans depicts a resolutely modern queen; rather than on a throne, she poses on an upholstered chaise longue, with her feather fan and her little King Charles dog at her feet.
