Alexis GRIMOU (Argenteuil 1678 - Paris 1733) - Lot 77
Alexis GRIMOU (Argenteuil 1678 - Paris 1733) Portrait of a Lady in Fancy Dress Canvas H. 82 cm - L. 65 cm ET Annotated on the stretcher (19th century) ?orile of LOUIS 14th P.Mignard Old restorations At the turn of the 18th century, a renewed taste for the models of the Spanish Golden Age (Velázquez, Murillo, Ribera) spread throughout Europe. This aesthetic, perceived as more noble and "authentic" than French painting still marked by the legacy of the Grand Siècle, inspired artists eager to renew the art of portraiture. In France, Alexis Grimou (1678-1733) established himself as one of the leading exponents of this fashion, and his "Spanish-style" portraits appealed to an audience of refined amateurs who saw in this aesthetic a sign of distinction and erudition. They stood in contrast to the more "French" and codified formal portraits. This style, somewhat at the margins of academic painting, contributed directly to his reputation as the "French Van Dyck", and to the taste for these whimsical portraits. Our painting is similar to several other fantasy portraits or portraits in Spanish garb: - Mes Libert et Castor sale, April 27, 1993, no. 23 (previously Palais Galliera sale, June 14, 1974, no. 31), signed and dated 1711; - Mes Besançon et Vinart sale, Succession Princesse Murat, May 5, 1961, no. 132 (canvas H. 72 cm - L. 59 cm, attributed to Raoux); - London sale, April 14, 2011, no. 68 "portrait de femme à l'espagnole, tenant un masque" canvas H. 82,3 cm - L. 65,8 cm, signed and dated 1728; - Paris, art market, 2021.
