(1840). HOLBEIN (Hans). THE DANCE OF THE DEAD IN BALE. Wissenburg, Wentzel, (circa 1840). In folio, contemporary illustrated boards. Second edition of this dance of the dead lithographed by Fr. Wentzel and inspired by the fresco paintings on the cemetery wall of St. John's Church in Basel. THE 40 SUPERB LITHOGRAPHED PLATES and text follow Holbein's Dance of the Dead, with the exception of plate 35, where the Turk is replaced by a Chinese, and plate 38, where the artist, Hieronimus Heiss, has depicted himself with a text in which death calls him by name. The text accompanying each plate is written in German, French and English. Worn cardboard with missing spine, several interior brown spots.
