(1670). BERNIER (François). HISTOIRE DE LA DERNIERE REVOLUTION DES ETATS DU GRAND MOGOL - SUITE DES MEMOIRES. Paris, Claude Barbin, 1670 - 1671. 4 volumes of [8]-268 and 293-[1]-178-2bl.-137-1bl-69 pages, bound in 2 volumes in-12 of, fawn basane, ornate ribbed spine (period binding). RARE FIRST EDITION. François Bernier (1620-1688), a philosopher and traveler at the forefront of historians of India, was the first European to describe Kashmir; his savory style and the accuracy of his research make him one of the most sought-after authors of travel accounts. The first 2 volumes give information on the 5 years of civil war from 1655 to 1660, with a letter on the extent of Hindustan and the circulation of wealth; the third contains descriptions of Delhi and Agra, with 2 letters, one on the superstitions and strange ways of the Gentiles and the other on the doctrine of atoms and the nature of human understanding. The bindings are different, a small gallery on several leaves. The titles of the last 2 parts are missing (?). (Brunet I, 802).
