Alexei Petrovich BOGOLIUBOV (Pomerania, 1824 - Paris, 1896) Four Views of Chambaudoin Castle (1879) Suite of four drawings, ink and ink wash on paper, each signed lower right or left in in Cyrillic, framed under a Marie-Louise captioned in brown ink "Château de Chambaudoin (Loiret) 1879" and gilded wooden rod. H. 11.2 cm - W. 18.2 cm (sight); H. 42 cm - W. 54 cm (frame). MC Provenance : - Baron Ury de Günzburg (1840-1914) - Then by descent This suite of four washes, dated 1879, was executed during the artist's stay at Château de Chambaudoin of Chambaudoin, owned by Baron Ury de Günzburg, heir to a great banking family of Russian origin. A family account sent by Docteur Pointel and preserved in the archives of the baron's baron's descendants, sheds light on the context in which these delicate drawings were created: "Your kind letter of August 1st about the Château de Chambaudoin has reached me, and I am happy to give you the few details I have about it. information I have about it. Baron Ury de Günzburg, my grandfather, was the son of Joseph de Günzburg, a great landowner. Günzburg, a large landowner in the Crimea, ennobled by the Grand Duke of Hesse and the Emperor of Russia. I understand he bought Chambaudoin after the 1870 war from the Marquis and Marquise de Saint Mars, an elderly and childless and sold it around 1895. He bred Russian horses and imported hares, which, it seems, are still still talked about in the country. He entertained a great deal and counted among his guests the Grand Duke Nicholas, brother of the Tsar, and the writer Tourguéniev. I have a few washes by the Russian painter Bogolioubov, forgotten today, but quite famous at the time, depicting some of these characters.
