At its exhibition in Brussels in 1933, the painting was noted by the critics, who wrote: "Delville meditates on 'Le Secret de la Tombe'. The soul is carried away into the mystery of the spheres, while a mourning figure taking the form of a sphinx leans over." (Le Thyrse, 1933). Here, the artist evokes part of his complex philosophy, writing ten years before this work: "And it's because everything enchants and illuminates me, / that I don't believe in the power of gold, / and that I don't cross the nothingness of death!" ("Les splendeurs méconnues", 1922).
