Emmanuel Auguste MASSÉ (1818-1881) - Lot 58
Emmanuel Auguste MASSÉ (1818-1881) "The Battle of Jemappes". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1845, inscribed after H. Vernet lower right. (Damage to canvas). H. 60 cm - L. 99 cm Wooden frame and gilded stucco (small accident). The Battle of Jemappes (November 6, 1792) took place at Jemappes, near Mons in present-day Belgium, between Austria (Holy Roman Empire) and Republican France on November 6, 1792. Louis-Philippe d'Orléans (1773-1850), Duc de Chartres, took part in the battle with his brother on the side of the French troops. After becoming King in 1830, he commissioned four large-scale battle paintings from Horace Vernet, including a replica by Henry Scheffer of the battle of Jemmapes, currently on display at Versailles. Our painting represents the episode in which general François Richer Drouet appears mortally wounded. Provenance: Château de Panneville (Seine-Maritime).
