CHARDIN (Jean). JOURNAL DU VOYAGE DU CHEVALIER CHARDIN EN PERSE ET AUX INDES ORIENTALES PAR LA MER NOIRE ET PAR LA COLCHIDE. Londres, Chez Moyse Pitt en Duke-street à Westminster, 1686. In folio of [14]-323 mal chiff. 349-1bl.-[5] pages, (Nombr. pagination errors) granite calf, gilt arms of the city of Lyon in the center of the boards, ornate spine, (period binding). RARE ORIGINAL EDITION of this famous relation, written with great charm and pleasure; it is illustrated with an engraved title, a portrait by Chardin and 16 REMARKABLE ENGRAVED PLANCHES, almost all folding. The latter include a large map of the Black Sea, 6 plates showing the cities of Teflis, Irivan, Tauris, Sultania, Kom and Kachan, and 9 others detailing either the author's reception feast in Teflis, the caravanserai in Kachan or the ancient tombs and burial grounds of ancient kings. This journey, undertaken between 1671 and 1673 from Paris to Isfahan, is of great importance for the history of Persia and Armenia. Ex-libris Froissart. Repairs to several plates, the plate of Teflis is missing, yellow stains, the margin of the portrait is missing, the last leaf of the text is cut without missing text, hinges skilfully restored (Chadenat, 546) (Brunet I, 1802) (Weber II, 377).
