GUERICKE (Otto von). EXPERIMENTA NOVA (UT VOCANTUR) MAGDEBUR - Lot 68

GUERICKE (Otto von). EXPERIMENTA NOVA (UT VOCANTUR) MAGDEBURGICA DE VACUO SPATIO. Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius Van Waesberge, 1672. Small folio of [16]-244-[5]-1bl. pages, brown calf, ornate ribbed spine (period binding). FIRST EDITION. A rare work of great interest for the history of science. The author, a German physicist and burgomaster of Magdeburg, carried out some famous experiments in his city, which are presented in this book together with some very curious plates. In addition to a beautiful frontispiece, the 21 engraved plates, including 2 fold-outs, relate to experiments on the gravity of air and the author's invention of the pneumatic machine and the anemoscope barometer. Also included is a MAP OF THE MOON, undoubtedly one of the earliest published, and another depicting the earliest electrical device. Copy without the portrait, a few minor brown spots, restored headbands (Horblit no. 44).
