This bowl, decorated with a bacchanalian scene and quotations from Rabelais' Gargantua on the outer rim, bears witness to the historicist taste and technical refinement of the period. It follows in the tradition of French art bronzes produced for bourgeois and aristocratic customers. It was made by the bronze manufacturer Victor Delaplane. Little is known about this publisher, except that he was located at 60 rue de Paradis-Faubourg-Poissonnière, Paris.
