In folio, anthracite-gray morocco, cover decorated with a large mosaic hexagram in black-gray morocco set with an intaglio and cold decoration of pastilles of various sizes, from which emanates a large geometrical decoration of interlocking gilded fillets, large inner frame in morocco of the same hue, opaline moire lining and endpapers, gilded edges on witness, covers and spine, velvet-lined half-black morocco folder with flap, lined slipcase (F.L.S.). A REMARKABLE WORK OF EXTREME REFINEMENT, both for its illustration and for its masterly binding by François Louis Schmied. It is entirely mitered. The book is illustrated with 28 color woodcuts by François-Louis Schmied, engraved in his studio and printed under the direction of his son, Théo. The illustrations are all the same size, forming a double-page spread of text alone, framed by monochrome lines. Minor scuffing to spine of dust jacket. Edition of 172 copies, this one of 150 on Madagascar, signed in pencil by the artist. A PERFECT COPY PRESERVED IN A SUMPTUOUS ORNATE BINDING.
