STENDHAL. HISTORY OF PAINTING IN ITALY. - Lot 215
STENDHAL. HISTORY OF PAINTING IN ITALY. Paris, P. Didot, 1817. 2 volumes in-8, half basane maroquinée terre de Sienne, decorated smooth spines (period binding). ONE OF THE VERY RARE EXEMPLIES Bearing BEYLE'S NAME on the titles (instead of B.A.A.) with the mention "Ex-auditeur au Conseil d'Etat". The only copy known for a long time to conform to this was that of Mérimée; only a dozen or so have since been found, and it was concluded that Stendhal had intended them for friends. In addition, the epigraph differs from current copies by 6 verses in Italian and has the boxes in volume I (209-210) and in volume II (21, 22, 23); both volumes include the two errata, which are often missing (Escoffier n°271) (Cordier, 18-1). An untrimmed copy preserved in a pleasant contemporary half-binding, with a few brown spots; it belonged to Léon Olschki with his bookplate.
