[HOURS]. HEURES A L'USAGE DE PARIS. Gothic manuscript in Lat - Lot 96
[HOURS]. HEURES A L'USAGE DE PARIS. Gothic manuscript in Latin and French on 15th century vellum, 75 leaves (51 and 24), bound in 1 small in-8 volume (170 x 120 mm), old red morocco, Du Seuil-style boards, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges (17th century binding).
- 1st part (51 unnumbered leaves). 14 lines per page, ruled in brown ink. 2 full-page illuminations (Flight to Egypt and a lady at prayer before the Virgin and Child), 1 folio with a rich frame of gold foliate scrolls, punctuated by blue and red florets, a 6-page calendar and various texts from the books of hours, prayers to the Virgin, psalms, orations, gospels, devotional exercises, etc., all in Latin and French.
The entire manuscript is profusely decorated with gold-illuminated red lettering on a red or blue background, in various sizes and with ornate line ends.
- 2nd part: 24 unnumbered leaves containing orations and prayers in French and Latin, embellished with blue and red initials in gold. This is followed by several leaves containing short biographies, often in French, of saints (Sébastien, Barbara, Cecilia, Appolonia, Eutrope, etc.).
Around twenty leaves are probably missing, probably the miniatures and the framed leaves, which have been cut out. The 2 miniatures are cut short and missing.
Early handwritten note: "Monseigneur de Grosbois mon père ma donne ces presentes à Paris le premier jour de Mars.... Morreau".
