BURMA/MYANMAR, late 19th/early 20th century - Lot 304
BURMA/MYANMAR, late 19th/early 20th century Painted wooden statue depicting an old man or ascetic standing, toothless, thin and wrinkled, his hair in a bun, bare-chested with a cloth thrown over his shoulder and wearing a long green loincloth, holding an umbrella in one hand and a book in the other, on a rounded base. H. 169.5 cm LdM Worn polychromy, chips and cracks, missing parasol (handle) This statue is probably a representation of one of the four decisive encounters Prince Siddhartha Gautama - the future Buddha - had when leaving the palace where he grew up: he crossed paths with an old man, a sick man, a dead man and a wandering ascetic. In this way, he discovers human suffering. These four encounters or visions, marking an important stage in Shakyamuni Buddha's life, were a popular subject in Burma, and were often depicted.
