The line from Lyon to Grenoble was granted to the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer de Saint-Rambert à Grenoble by an agreement signed on March 16, 1857 between the Minister of Public Works and the Company. It was officially inaugurated in 1860 by Napoleon III, who made the journey from Saint-Rambert to Grenoble with Empress Eugénie.
