Caruelle d'Aligny explored Italy for five years from 1822, joined by Corot in 1825. The Serpentara forest was made famous by the infatuation it aroused, particularly among German Romantic painters, to such an extent that in 1873 the grove was acquired by the German Reich to save it from deforestation.
