"Biblical scene" - Lot 341
"Biblical scene" Tapestry from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson. Based on a model by Isaac Moillon (1614-1673). Late 17th - early 18th century. Woven in wool and silk; H. 2.59 x W. 2.69 m This interesting tapestry is centered around a reduced number of characters: on the left, an emperor seated on his throne, with the crown at his side, receives a visit from a pope, or great bishop of Rome. The latter, richly dressed and wearing the tiara, points to the sky, while the emperor points with his right hand to an illustration held by a young ecclesiastic. This features busts of St. Peter, recognizable by the keys, his attribute, and another saint, probably St. Paul. In the background, partly obscured by the curtain, the architecture of an antique temple can be seen. Flower garland and acanthus leaf borders. It retains its beautiful colors and original border. It shows wear in the silks and old restorations. It is reduced in height and probably in width. Lower border missing. Expert : Mr Alexandre CHEVALIER
