Heraldic "repostero" tapestry with the arms of a Spanish fam - Lot 205
Heraldic "repostero" tapestry with the arms of a Spanish family bearing in I Castro Abad, in II and III Aragon-Sicily and in IV the order of the Dominiquins. Spain, Madrid or Salamanca Late 16th century, early 17th century H. 300 cm - L. 230 cm Dusty, restorations King Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), anxious to boost the economy of his new capital Madrid, commissioned weaver Pedro Gutiérrez to found a royal tapestry factory: the Santa Isabel Factory. Gutiérrez had trained in the workshops of Salamanca, then famous for its repostero (or heraldic tapestry) typology. The archives of the Real Fabrica de Madrid provide two pieces of information on Madrid's tapestry production: the clientele of the royal workshops was varied but always notable, sometimes close to the king; they mainly ordered reposteros, which became Santa Isabel's specialty. Flanders, and in particular the Bruges factories, also specialized in this type of work to attract Spanish customers. This is why it is not always easy to determine whether a repostero was woven in Spain or in Flanders. The economy of the colors (blue-brown) and the borders are a criterion for attribution: the alternation of cut leathers, rolled leathers and cartouches are recurrent in Spain. The borders on our piece, identical to those on a heraldic tapestry attributed to Spanish workshops sold at Artcurial on July 13, 2021, confirm a Hispanic origin. Today, these lissier productions are being rediscovered and could enable us to reattribute Flemish tapestries to the Salamanca or Madrid workshops. An identical tapestry (with the exception of a few heraldic details) was sold at Tajan on December 6, 1993.
