CHINA, Canton, 19th century Sixteen-strand ivory fan carved and openworked with flowers and figures among pavilions and gardens, each side of the leaf painted in gouache with a large scene showing mandarins, ladies and servants in palaces and gardens, their silk garments and each face painted on an ivory pastille, the silver clasp, in its rectangular lobed box with black and gold lacquered decoration (a central scene figured surrounded by foliage), the interior in partially painted silk.
