Dogon mask, Kanaga, Mali - Lot 146
Dogon mask, Kanaga, Mali
H. 95 cm
Used in Dogon country, the Kanaga mask appeared at the time of the dama mourning ceremony. It evokes the creator god Amma, signifying birth and regeneration. According to myth, it is linked to the ancestors of mankind.
The double cross, symbolizing the lizard, is a traditional feature of the Kanaga mask. Here, it surmounts a schematized face enhanced with black pigments. The forehead is rounded, the eyebrows revealed by two lines of kaolin. The nose is strongly projected forward.
