Very interesting and rare documentation on the exchange of goods between the Maghreb and Europe in the mid-18th century.
François Tondard, son of François and Marie Macaire, was born in Lyon on September 7, 1704, and died in Albenc, Isère, on February 23, 1768. He set up as a merchant in Lyon with Ferrand on rue de l'Arbre-Sec.
On April 10, 1751, he wrote: "the King of Morocco has again increased wool export duties, which will make them very expensive again"; "in Saffy, there is not enough wool to fill the ships. We fill the vessels with wax and copper" (May 29, 1751); "you will observe that these goods must be packaged so that they can be loaded at Nice on the back of a mule: if we can put indigo in two small barrels and a package on top, that is better than putting it in a bag because in a bag it tears a lot, besides the powder that comes off by the movement pierces and comes out of the bag. I forget to tell you that I don't know what quality of indigo is suitable for Turin, whether it's blue or copper" (October 10, 1752) MLL
