VERLAINE, Paul (1844-1896). Autograph letter signed, to his publisher Léon Vanier. 2 pp. in-12 oblong. [Hôpital Broussais], Saturday, March 10 [1888].
Beautiful letter written during one of his stays at Broussais Hospital, asking his publisher Léon Vanier for news of his collections, including Amour, soon to be published, and Bonheur, which he is currently composing.
"Mr. Vally, whom I have already recommended to you and whom I still recommend to you for writings if possible, will bring you this which is to the effect of 1° sending you the enclosed letter. You will find in it all the information and lessons you need. Moral! A little more publicity, scongnieugnieu! Motus as to what concerns the Revue Indépendante (which could at least have referred this gentleman to you). This letter also proves that I also have fans in Argérie [sic]. I reply at the same time (or almost, let's not exaggerate!) as this, this time addressing this brave colonist to you, and asking him to send you a list of bookshops there likely to sell Verlaine. 2° to send you "under this envelope" a piece for Bonheur: file it! I gave a copy to the Jeune Belgique, which asked me for verses through Giraud. 3° to ask you when Amour will be published. I don't think events are likely to delay the sale, do you? 4° to tell you that I expect to be out from the 15th to the 20th [...]".
An engraved portrait is enclosed. MLL
