[AFFAIRE DREYFUS - ZOLA, Emile]. "Official Testament of Émil - Lot 189
[AFFAIRE DREYFUS - ZOLA, Emile]. "Official Testament of Émile Zola". Printed pamphlet, on mourning paper. Paris, Léon Hayard, s.d. 2 pp. small in-folio. Tears at folds, chips and stains.
Violent pamphlet against Zola and Dreyfus, written in the first person, mimicking his alleged last will and testament, as a pretext for edifying anti-Semitic remarks:
"I, the undersigned, at the moment of going gaga, and feeling that my faculties are diminishing and call for the care of that of medicine, I decide to write my will [...]". He bequeaths all these works to the "cottages of necessity" [toilettes] "who will make use of them as is naturally indicated". The author sites Le Bonheur des Dames, Le Rêve, Lourdes, Germinal, l'Assommoir and the Rougon-Macquart in general, etc., and "the cause of the Dreyfus yokel", fictitiously bequeathing books to each actor in the Dreyfus affair, including Mathieu Dreyfus, Reinach, Scheurer-Kestner, Labori (who will receive J'Accuse), Esterhazy, etc.
"You are requested to attend the convoy, service and funeral of the pornographer, defender of the traitor Dreyfus. Emile Zola, died in the Assize Court at the Palais de Justice, Paris, at the age of fifty-eight, following a long and painful acute Scandalitis, caused by a cerebral softening, combined with indigestion of Galette Israélite.
The illustrious writer did, however, have time before his death to have himself circumcised, but this did not prevent him from going ad patres [...]. He warned his children that they were "absolutely forbidden to read my works", etc.
