TARDIEU (Ambroise). [Portrait des généraux français]. [Paris, Panckoucke, 1818]. In-folio of 152 leaves, half havane calf, raciné paper boards decorated with a gilt roulette, smooth spine decorated, yellow edges (period binding). Rare suite of 152 portraits of all the principal generals of the Revolution and Empire. The figures are stipple-engraved, often by Forestier or Lambert, under the direction of Ambroise Tardieu, each accompanied by a note recounting the heroic deeds or glorious deaths of the characters: Berthier, Lannes, Bessières, Poniatowski, Dessolle, Junot, Davout,... A handwritten table is attached. In this copy, the first 3 portraits are of Napoleon, and all the portraits and each corresponding notice have been cut out and glued to the center of a folio. Spine rubbed, last box damaged. Provenances: Ex-libris of Christian Hammer and "Artium Genio". ED
